The "Middle Rhine" refers to the section of Germany's Rhine River, or the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, between Bingen, Rüdesheim and Koblenz. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stretch of the river cuts through steep hills and slate mountain cliffs and features iconic castles, vineyards and historic towns like Bacharach.

Castles and commerce

More than forty medieval castles line the Middle Rhine, serving as defensive posts and toll stations. During the Middle Ages, local princes controlled the waterway and taxed merchants transporting salt, wine and silk. Some of the impressive structures you’ll see on a voyage include:

• Marksburg Castle: This is the only hilltop fortress on the Middle Rhine that was never destroyed, surviving intact from its 12th‑century origins despite minor damage in World War II. Its preserved cannons, medieval herb garden, and original interiors offer a rare, authentic look at daily life in the Middle Ages.
• Rheinstein Castle: Built in the early 14th century, this castle blends Gothic and Romantic architectural styles. It was one of the very first castles restored during the 19th-century Rhine Romanticism movement, and its revival helped spark a wave of castle restorations across Germany.
• Pfalzgrafenstein Castle: A toll station located on a river island. This "stone ship" used chains to block the river, forcing vessels to pay tolls to local princes.

In 2002, UNESCO designated 65 kilometers of the Rhine River valley as a World Heritage Site. This recognition honors the river's role as a cultural link between the Mediterranean region and Northern Europe for 2,000 years.

The origins of Rhine Romanticism

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Middle Rhine landscape was home to a cultural movement called Rhine Romanticism. As the Industrial Revolution reshaped Europe, artists and writers rejected urban industrialization and looked instead to nature and themes from the Middle Ages for inspiration.

The region’s timber-framed houses and ruined fortresses influenced major works of Western art. Lord Byron and Heinrich Heine wrote poems about the river’s cliffs and legends. J.M.W. Turner produced watercolors of the valley and Richard Wagner based The Ring Cycle on local Germanic myths.
