Lord Carnarvon Invites You to Egypt

Join the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, godfather of the Viking Osiris, as he shares highlights from his family’s trip to Egypt in November 2024 for the naming of our newest ships on the Nile River. Lord Carnarvon’s great‑grandfather, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, was Howard Carter’s benefactor and co‑explorer, whose excavation uncovered the tomb of King Tutankhamen almost exactly 102 years earlier on November 4, 1922.

  • (bright music) - Hello from Viking Sobek, docked almost at the foot of the Karnak Temple on the banks of the River Nile here in Luxor, Egypt.

  • Across the Nile is a magnificent valley of the Kings, where just over 100 years ago, my great-grandfather and Howard Carter made the magnificent discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun.

  • A few days ago, my son Eddie, named Viking ship Hathor, he's now a godfather.

  • So we have both historic and contemporary ties to this glorious culture with its beautiful architecture and art and ancient ways.

  • We've just returned to Luxor from sailing on the River Nile, seeing the amazing temples at both Dendera and Esna.

  • It was a truly wonderful experience, and we also had the fortune of both of my sons, George and Edward, to be up in the hot air balloons you see behind us, which is an amazing experience seeing all the glories of the West Bank and the many tombs and the Valley of the Kings from a great height, which is truly memorable.

  • I can so strongly recommend a visit to Egypt on Viking ships.

  • They really are so well appointed, so comfortable, and a great experience, something to really treasure for many years.
