El Balyana, Egypt

  • Ancient Egyptian temple interior with hieroglyphs

Nestled amid the fertile land of the Nile Valley, today El Balyana serves as a trade hub for the dates and sugarcane grown in the surrounding fields. Beyond its agriculture, the city is best known as the gateway to Abydos, one of ancient Egypt’s most sacred religious centers and an early pharaonic burial site. Abydos’s annual Festival of Osiris drew pilgrims throughout the centuries. In the Temple of Seti I, preserved reliefs offer a glimpse into the artistic legacy of ancient Egypt, while the King’s List provides an invaluable record of the country’s royal history.

Nag Hammadi, Egypt

  • Lush palm grove beside desert farmland

Founded in the 19th century by landowner Mahmoud Pasha Hammadi, Nag Hammadi rests on the west bank of the Nile. Along the river stands Prince Youssef Kamal’s palace, an early 20th-century structure that combines European and Islamic architectural influences. The city is best known for the Nag Hammadi Library, a collection of Coptic papyrus codices that were discovered in a nearby field in 1945. These early Christian and Gnostic texts date back to the 3rd and 4th centuries and have provided valuable insight into early religious thought.
