Transfer to the Sheraton Kraków Hotel (or similar), centrally located near the historic center (a UNESCO Site) and Wawel Castle district of Kraków. Take the evening to begin exploring the city a bit on your own, perhaps sample some of the hearty Polish cuisine.
After breakfast, join your guide for a tour of the key sights of Kraków, one of Poland’s oldest and largest cities and home to a dozen universities. First visit the hilltop Wawel Castle, which served as a royal residence for centuries. See Gothic St. Mary’s Church with its 14th-century wooden altar; hear its hourly trumpet from the main tower and learn the story behind it. Tour Wawel Cathedral, home of the giant bell of Zygmunt and burial place of Polish royalty, and walk through the Old Town and Rynek Glówny (Market Square) area. Your afternoon is free to tour Kraków—visit one of its nearly 30 museums, browse the galleries, taste local sauerkraut or dumplings. A Viking concierge is available to help you plan your visit. (B)
Kraków had a thriving Jewish community for centuries, but during the Second World War everything changed. This morning you have a choice of two UNESCO Sites. Take a ride just outside the city for a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Tour the camp—now a museum—and view a short film to learn about the Nazis’ “final solution.” Or, tour the Wieliczka Salt Mine; a working salt mine from the 13th to the 20th centuries, this fascinating underground facility features dozens of statues, three chapels and an entire cathedral with chandeliers all carved out of rock salt—plus a subterranean lake—and attracts more than a million visitors every year.
During afternoon free time, you can tour Kazimierz, historic center of Kraków’s Jewish culture, or Oskar Schindler’s factory, now a museum. Perhaps take a walk on the campus of Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364, Poland’s oldest. Kraków is a shopping mecca, particularly in the Rynek Glówny area near the castle. Local souvenirs include handmade wooden boxes, toys and chess sets, traditional Polish clothing and lace, antiques, vodka and lots of amber jewelry in traditional and contemporary designs. (B)
