Oltenita is a small city in Romania on the Danube River, just across the Danube from the Bulgarian city of Tutrakan. With human habitation in the area dating back to Neolithic times circa 4500 B.C., the area was the site of Roman and Byzantine fortifications. The name of the town first appeared in the early 16th century. Local attractions include the nearby Gumelnita archeological reserve and the Church of St. Nicholas.
