Founded in 1008 A.D. between two branches of the Rhine River, Dordrecht was one of most prosperous ports in the Netherlands. Its natural beauty inspired many 17th- and 18th-century artists. The city lies centered along the Voorstraats Haven, or main canal. The medieval houses, courtyards, gates and quays provide an interesting contrast to the more modern buildings. Dordrecht is also the starting point for excursions to nearby Kinderdijk, famed for its historic working windmills.
